MUSINGS: The Diamond Peel Effect July 17, 2011

I am usually not adventurous when it comes to cosmetic procedures. In my lifetime, I can count my visit to the dermatologist using just 1 hand. I never knew that my most recent visit would be the most painful one ever (which I am praying would never need to be repeated). All because I tried out the ever popular procedure nowadays – The diamond peel.

Yearly we have to undergo a physical exam as part of our employment requirement. For the past 3 years, part of the “package” was an optional free diamond peel. I skipped that portion the past 2 years as I was in a hurry to get the exam over with and enjoy the remainder of my weekend. This year, however, I decided to try it since I’ve been hearing rave reviews from people on what a diamond peel can do to your skin.

From ehow.com, a Diamond Peel treatment is described as:
“A non-surgical procedure in which the skin is exfoliated to remove dead skin cells using actual diamond chips to vacuum the skin away. In order to do this, the top layer of skin is removed in order to rejuvenate the skin. The epidermal cell structure is actually restored, increasing the skin’s elasticity and collagen levels.”

In my experience, it felt similar to having your face scrubbed gently by a sand paper. In the whole procedure, it did not feel painful or anything. I actually felt relaxed the whole time. The technician even explained to me how pretty my skin would be after the procedure and how I should protect it with sunblock as my face would be a bit sensitive over the next few days. I actually followed her instructions on how to care for my skin on the days that followed. However, instead of my skin looking better, my skin nightmare started.

3 days later, i noticed a huge zit growing on my face. I did not mind it at first as I thought it was just a hormonal thing. I do get one or two zits from time to time but generally, my skin is zit free. So as zits started to pop out my skin in groups, I naturally got alarmed. It went to the point that I declined going out with friends because I was that conscious of how the zits look like.

After 3 weeks, this is how my cheeks looked like: 😦

I initially tried a spot corrector… to no avail. I tried using tea-tree concealers… it did not work as the zit shape was still very noticeable. I also noticed that as one zit would vanish, about 2 would replace it… it was very painful and made my skin look like I was walloped by a porcupine. (I took a picture of how it looked like but decided not to post as people might find the photo disturbing).

I finally went to the dermatologist to seek help and help she did. She injected every single zit (about 15-20 on my whole face 😦 I was literally chanting to myself with every painful injection prick – “The vain do not complain”)with a medicine which somehow deflated the zit immediately and made them less noticeable. I also got a prescription for antibiotics (expensive medicine… I swear!!! but I’m honestly willing to try anything and everything at that point)… and I got a facial wash, toner, and cream from the dermatologist (which were also quite pricey) to help relieve and completely stop the zits from reproducing on my face.

Thank God for my nice doctor, it stopped reproducing. I now had to deal with the pimple scar. My skin is smooth again but the scars were noticeable. I had an appendectomy before and I was treating the surgical scar with Contractubex (a scar remover ointment) which actually made my scar look less scary. I gambled and tried it on my pimple scars…

I think it’s working since now, here is what my cheeks look like:

Now, with just a little concealer the scars are all gone… I can’t wait for them to be really gone for good. Yay!!!

Well back to Diamond peel. After that horrendous ordeal, I was able to speak to several people and all seem to have the same comment to me: they never met a person who had a diamond peel that had a good effect on them. Well one mentioned that out of the 5 people she knew who had a diamond peel, only 1 said it made her skin look better.

Facial treatments – specially faddish facial treatments are really dependent on how one’s skin would react to the treatment. I learned that the hard, painful and very expensive way. What was supposed to be a free treatment costed me several thousands of pesos to get my skin the way it was before.

My point really is that if there is nothing wrong with your skin, skip the treatments and
1) Think twice, even three times before you actually get a treatment done.

2) When you do decide to get a treatment, try to search the net or ask around from friends and family if they tried that treatment and what were the effects.

3) Ask for a reliable clinic to get a treatment. Do not gamble on a “clinic” or “spa” that offers the said treatment at a cheap price. We are talking about our face so me, personally, I’d rather spend a lot and be assured of positive results than gamble on something cheap and cost me more in the long run.

We actually look great the way we are, with the slight imperfections. Let’s not risk our skins to these treatments if we are generally happy with the way we look like. I actually swore off diamond peels… forever!!! I hope I won’t visit the dermatologist soon for another skin mishap. 😦

I can really relate to this! I am now experiencing the worst ever breakouts in my face after having a diamond peel treatment. I really thought that it would lessen my problem regarding pimple marks but it all turned out to be an addition to my predicament.

  2. i was supposed to try diamond peel. But after reading your blog, i got alarmed and scared. Is this really true? I have some friends who had diamond peel but their skin is ok naman. Im scared now to try it.

    • Hi Cheryl! Yeah… sad to say. I sincerely wished it gave me the results that people raved about but it didn’t. I also have friends who tried it and said it worked ok with them. If you have sensitive skin or if your skin is relatively fine the way it is, I think you can skip on this treatment… πŸ™‚

I’m 16 year old and im on my hell-like experience from pimples and scars on my face. Im planning to have this diamond peel treatment, i’ve tried so many treatments but all of the above showed no effect after having it. Do u think diamond peel would help me? Your blog seems very alarming, im comfused about taking this treatment.

  4. angelofrvr Says:

Ate kamina, do you think it is advisable to undergo diamond peel for me even i still have this fresh pimples and acne on my face?

    • Hi Angelo! I think the best course of action is to check with a dermatologist before you undergo any treatment. From my research, I think diamond peels should not be done when you have fresh pimples or open wounds – it will only aggravate the situation. The derma would help you a lot in terms of finding out the real source of your pimples and how to best treat it. πŸ™‚ Good luck!!! Let me know how it works out. πŸ™‚

I really wanted to try out the diamond peel especially after hearing the rave about it recently and while I was at this spa that offers it, the beauty technician told me to ponder over it for a while and come back once I’m really sure I want to undergo the treatment especially because I don’t have bad skin nor pimples at all except for an oily forehead. Thank god for that advice because when I got home I did more research about it and found out there are also a lot of negative feedbacks. I also read a magazine which had Dra. Vicky Belo as the correspondent and she said that diamond peels are risky because it causes little wounding in the skin when seen through a microscope and it allows entry of bacteria easily. And since It uses a blade, it’s risky because what if the last person who used it has aids? She says that they only clean the blade using alcohol or maybe a wash which doesn’t really clean everything. So to all of you out there thinking about getting a diamond peel, ask about it through an expert first if you really need to have it or not πŸ™‚

hi. I’m recently going through the exact same thing. I never had pimples this bad, even when I was pregnant. I used to get one or two only during the time of the month. now I have them in clusters.

can you please tell me what your derma prescribed you to stop the breakout? what antibiotics did she give you?

  7. Cat Says:

i am currently going through the same thing. my breakout is actually worse than when i was pregnant! and like you, aside from the occasional one or two pimples during that time of the month, my face is practically spotless. i’m so stressed right now i think it’s making my condition worse.

can you please tell me what your derma prescribed? what antibiotics did she give you?

    • Hi Cat! So sorry for the really late response. I have been inactive on my blogging recently due to my work assignment. However, in terms of antibiotics, I really can’t remember anymore but definitely, you need to get a prescription before you can get it from the drugstore. In terms of skincare, I used Cetaphil facial wash, an acne clearing toner (from my derma), and she also gave me this ointment for the small pimples. As for the pimple scars, I used contractubex… don’t expect immediate results but it actually works in clearing the scars πŸ™‚ For the breakout itself, she injected each pimple with steroids. I strongly suggest you visit a dermatologist because she will prescribe the best product for your skin type. πŸ™‚ Don’t worry, mine cleared out eventually but I really had to be religious in following the regimen the derma prescribed. Good luck and I hope that clears out soon. πŸ™‚

hello, I too had the same experience 😦 i had diamond peel done on my face , hoping to improve the appearance of my pimple scars. Unfortunately, it did the opposite. I began to have more breakouts instead. can you please share to me the meds that the doc gave you so that I could try it for myself too? I would really appreciate it. thanks πŸ™‚

  9. chey Says:

I have a free diamond peeling treatment which came with my gym membership. I’m actually scheduled next week, but now I’m having second thoughts after reading your blog. Thanks for sharing!

  10. changlara Says:

this is very informative. i, too, like most of you got interested in diamond peeling. i’m even planning to go to Clarity to take advantage of our free stub. this blog made me think otherwise. might as well visit a dermatologist instead. huge thanks to you karmina πŸ™‚

  11. Teri Says:

Maybe diamond peel is not really advisable for everyone, like a certain product would not work to everyone. This is scary, I am thinking of availing such service, but maybe I really have to go to dermatologist first… Thanks for sharing..

  12. jacquingkay Says:

i have diamond peel all the time and it’s effects are great! you cant really generalize but i am truly sorry to what happened to yours…well, the owner of the clinic is my friend but she has treated the worst kind of pimpled face and all were treated beautifully…..outcome was great! so the above experience doesn’t apply to all….not good to generalize :)…but i guess if you really have sensitive skin, it is safest to consult a dermatologisT FIRST πŸ˜‰ CHEERS!!!

  13. Mitchy Says:

I just recently bought a coupon that offers discounts and free 1session of diamond peel and other derma treatments, But thanks to this blog ^_^ i am now deciding not to take risk.

  14. justkiejay Says:

OMG,good thing i’ve asked uncle google first.actually, am about to go for a diamond peel sked. Now, i change my mind,i have my pimples when i tried using dianne pills,i stopped abruptly because i cant stand the side effects and now am dealing with the consequences. I really had breakouts worst than what you posted above, and i experienced acne surgery and darn so painful, im dealing with my scars now. Is contractubex really helpful?i deal with mine with calamansi extract everyday, but i think it works really slow or maybe i just have a lot to deal with. Newyz,i’ll be attending a wedding tomorrow thats why i decided to have a diamond peel first:-( huhu..i just hope concealers will hide this imperfections of mine. Thanks b-t-w for the informations.merry christmas:-)

  15. Clarence Says:

Hi po. What was the prescription of your derma? Could you please indicate the name of soap, toner, and the medicines? Just want to check if it similar to what my derma gave me. πŸ™‚ Thanks in advance!

  16. Your case maybe an isolated case, karmina. Reputable clinics putting at 1,500 pesos per session versus those small time clinics (not in the mall) at 1/3 of the price per session literally go through the same procedure. The name of the clinic varies but it’s just sad that there are several untrained staffs who never learn their fairshare of the skin goal. My heart goes to you and your desire to take care of your skin. Be careful next time.

  17. Leai Says:

Sad to hear your story and i can really relate to you that also happened to me😒.I swear this treatment was a big jerk!!.. i just cured my zit with rejuvenating set”dr. Alvin” and thank God it really works on me and noe i just continued using it.lesson learned..

  18. Fleur Ong Says:

Im having the worst breakouts right now. I really dont know how this came about since I have clear skin ever since. I suspected it was because of the diamond peel I had last April and this blog confirmed my suspicion. Should have never made that terrible decision.

  19. Lou Tantoco Says:

Hey , did contractubex heal your scars ate?

  20. lovelene Says:

I found your post because i’ve been searching if theres anyone out there that has the same situation like me.
